Importance of Community at Wawona

Wawona Frozen Foods is committed to giving back to its local community. In fact, going above and beyond is part of the legacy of founder Earl Smittcamp and his wife, Muriel. They made numerous donations to the greater Fresno area, providing funding to many non-profits. For example, their $2 million donation helped to create the Smittcamp Family Honors Program at Fresno State in 1998, and funded the Smittcamp Alumni House.

Current CEO Bill Smittcamp has continued his parents’ tradition of giving back. He focuses much of his giving on Valley Children’s Healthcare, where he serves as chairman of the board of trustees. Bill also serves on the board of directors of Central Valley Community Bank and CSU Fresno Foundation.

We are so proud of the work that all of our family and employees have put into this community!

Trends Influencing Frozen Fruit Market

Frozen fruits can retain their quality over long storage periods. Freezing is a method of long-term preservation for fruits. The main advantage of preservation by freezing is the extended availability of frozen fruits during the off-season. Additionally, frozen fruits can be transported to remote markets that could not be accessed with fresh products.

Compared with ordinary fruit, frozen fruits retain the majority of their nutrients after the freezing process, although fruits may experience a loss of vitamin C. As the same time, fruits that we select to freeze here at Wawona are ripe and ready to eat, which are in the state of the highest nutritional value.

The increasing use of Frozen Fruit In Direct Consumption, Processing Consumption and other industries is driving the growth of the Frozen Fruit market across the globe. Expect to see a continued rise in frozen fruit popularity. Allow us at Wawona to assist you in your frozen fruit endeavors!

Improve your Sustainability by Eating Fruit!

The globalization and mass distribution of fruit worldwide allows us to enjoy a large variety of produce at any time of the year. Eating more seasonal fruit has become an increasingly popular message to improve the sustainability of our diets.

Fruit is an important part of a healthy and sustainable diet. They provide essential vitaminsminerals and dietary fibre, and tend to have a lower environmental impact than animal-based foods.

The overall picture that emerges from research, is that the fruit and vegetables with the lowest GHG emissions are those that are grown outside during their natural season without much use of additional energy and consumed in the same country or region.

Wawona Frozen Foods picks their fruits at peak ripeness to ensure the highest amount of nutritional content. Make sure to choose Wawona for all of your frozen fruit solutions — we are the answer to high quality products and sustainability!

Don’t Forget…March is National Frozen Foods Month!

March is National Frozen Food Month, which is a great reminder that frozen foods are a convenient and delicious way to eat within a family’s food budget, according to the American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI). AFFI highlights the benefits of frozen food with its 2022 Frozen Advantage Toolkit.

The advantages include:

  • Frozen foods are nutritious: Fruits and vegetables are harvested and quickly flash-frozen within hours to lock in key nutrients, vitamins and minerals like Riboflavin, Vitamins C and E, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Iron, Fiber, Phenolics.
  • Frozen foods reduce consumer food waste: Frozen foods don’t spoil in the freezer so consumers can eat all that they buy; unused portions can be returned to the freezer to be used for another meal. This reduces food waste and saves families money.
  • The frozen food aisle is packed with affordable healthier choices: Grocery stores now stock a wide array of healthier frozen foods with fewer calories, less saturated fat, sugar and sodium, and more fiber and whole grains.
  • Frozen foods are easy to prepare: They help families save time cooking and cleaning in the kitchen so they can spend more time together at the table.

The American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI) has developed resources that are helpful in understanding the important role frozen food plays in a healthy eating pattern. The Behavioral Science Of Increasing Fruit Consumption

One of the most common reasons many of the resolutions people made on January 1st will be abandoned is that people choose resolutions that are too difficult, and promise themselves changes that are too big because they want big results. Here are three, simple evidence-based ideas you can share with consumers to help them stick to their fruit resolutions:

Create a habit

If you can manage to create a habit, your desired behavior will become automatic – and so much easier to do. Habits aren’t easy to create, but there is a formula that works if you can put in the early effort to keep on track: pick a simple behavior, pick a time and place to do it, repeat the behavior at that time and place, and enjoy a little reward when you do it.

Make It Easy

Easy to see, grab, find, eat immediately, plan, keep around, buy, get in your mouth, get in your kids’ mouths, swallow, like, clean, pack, remember and habitualize.

Cultivate enjoyment

The evidence is strong: systematic exposure increases liking over time. It’s all about repeatedly trying to eat fruits and find new ways to incorporate them into your diet. Exposure works well with kids if you keep the experience positive by giving praise for trying and if you remain realistic: change won’t happen overnight, and the goal isn’t to create a connoisseur – just a kid who at least tolerates fruits.

You can read more about these and other evidence-based tips at fruitsandveggies.org.
