The Benefits of Using Frozen Fruit

A lot of people avoid purchasing frozen fruit because they think it’s not as healthy as fresh fruit. However, this is not the case! Read on to learn about the benefits of frozen fruit in your menu items.

Less Spoilage

Did you know that we waste about 12 million tons of fruit each year? While fruit gets thrown out for a variety of reasons, a lot of people toss out their fruit because it spoils before they have the chance to eat it.

Most fresh fruit spoils in about a week. However, frozen fruit can be kept into your freezer for up to a year or more!

Just As Many Vitamins (Sometimes More)

Many people steer clear of frozen fruit because they think it’s stripped of vitamins. However, in a lot of cases, frozen fruit has more vitamins than fresh fruit. Frozen fruits are picked at peak ripeness, and because they’re frozen right away, they’re able to retain more nutrients than fresh fruit.

Plus, there are all kinds of recipes you can whip up with frozen fruit.

IQF Food

Frozen fruit is also an IQF food, which means it’s cheaper, more nutritious, and longer-lasting. Plus, frozen fruit is always in season!

Fabulous Fruit Pie Delights

No matter the time of year, a fruit pie is a great way to end any meal. The best thing about fruit pies is that fruit pies can use fresh or frozen fruit, unlike other baked goods. With over 185 million pies sold every year, it’s easy to see why this is a favorite dessert.

Since 1945, Wawona has held the firm belief that freezing fresh fruit allows for optimum color, sweetness, and texture. That means that unlike canned fruit, Wawona’s frozen fruit will mimic fresh-picked fruit and is perfect for pies all year round.

Strawberry Pie
Traditionally a summer favorite sometimes served with rhubarb or whipped cream. These pies are known to be open-topped, meaning they only require a bottom crust.

Peach Pie
Normally a two-crust style pie, but sometimes it is made with a crumble topping. This sweet pie is a southern favorite where peach trees grow in the warmer weather and are excellent picnic pies.

Mixed Berry Pie
A winter favorite. This pie also makes use of a top and bottom crust. Commonly you will find blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries in any combination in a mixed berry pie. Normally a hearty pie served with whipped cream or ice cream.
